Who we are *

South Clackamas Historical Fencing (SCHF) was founded by a small group of HEMA enthusiasts who wanted to bring the art of historical fencing to our local community. We started with a simple goal: to create a space where people could explore medieval martial arts in a welcoming, supportive environment. Inspired by the longsword techniques of Fiore dei Liberi and the rich history of European fencing, we built this club to be more than just a place to train—it’s a community where learning, respect, and passion for history come together.

Whether you're here to dive deep into the martial traditions of the past or just want to try something new, we’re excited to share this journey with you.

FAQs

  • We keep things welcoming, friendly, and focused on learning. We take our training seriously but always with a sense of camaraderie—there’s no ego here, just a shared passion for historical fencing.

  • We’re primarily a study group focused on skill development, but members who are interested in competition will find plenty of opportunities to grow. We support both casual practitioners and those who want to take their training further.

  • Sessions usually start with warm-ups, followed by drills focused on footwork, guards, and techniques. Depending on the day, we may work on partner drills, sparring, or historical study.

  • We provide guided instruction based on historical sources, but there’s always room for discussion and experimentation. While we follow a structured approach, we also adapt to the group’s needs and interests.

  • Our members come from all walks of life—some are history buffs, others are martial artists, gamers, or just curious newcomers. The only thing we ask is a willingness to learn and respect others.

  • Safety is our top priority. We follow strict safety rules, use proper protective gear, and emphasize control in drills and sparring. Respect is key—communication and consent always come first.

  • No, HEMA isn’t structured like modern martial arts with belts. Progress is measured by skill development, understanding of historical techniques, and ability to apply them in drills and sparring.

  • Yes! We’re working on community outreach and demonstrations at local events. We also have a Discord where we discuss HEMA, history, and gear recommendations.

  • Show up regularly, engage with members, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. As we grow, there may be opportunities to help with event planning, teaching, or club organization.

  • Our club primarily recruits adults for safety reasons. However, we may make exceptions for teens 16+ who demonstrate maturity, genuine interest, and have parental permission.
